Several generations of students at Churchville-Chili’s Chestnut Ridge Elementary School have participated in fundraising for the American Heart Association (AHA). Over the past 27 years of support for the AHA Kids Heart Challenge, the school has raised an extraordinary total of more than $302,000. This February alone, the CRS community donated $22,750 to this great cause.

Program coordinator and physical education teacher Brooke Elnicky said, “Kids Heart Challenge is a fantastic opportunity for our K – fourth-grade students to not only learn about and enhance their personal physical fitness and health, but also for them to show compassion and empathy through a community service project.”

The school even had its own Honorary Heart Hero, first-grader Gavyn Rossi. This past fall, Gavyn had successful open heart surgery. The advances in research that help make happy stories like Gavyn’s possible are supported in part by Churchville-Chili students and their community through the Kids Heart Challenge.

In addition to the Kids Heart Challenges held at both CRS and Churchville Elementary School, which alone raised more than $19,000 this year, Churchville-Chili school district staff also took part in Go Red for Women Day on February 7. Staff members from all the district schools donated and wore red to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease.
